Outstanding!

This is an OUTSTANDING book. It is very readable, packed with great info and data, and flows very well. It is also very well structured and would appeal to a wide range of audience from entrepreneurs to policy makers, and from investors in start-ups to students of entrepreneurship. It is without doubt one of the best entrepreneurship books I have read.

Nowadays, there are thousands of books about entrepreneurship. Most of them build a false picture of the phenomenon. If you REALLY want to know about entrepreneurship this is the book you should buy. The book challenges the common myths about entrepreneurship and, drawing from rigorous research and data sources, describes entrepreneurship as it really occurs.

For example, the book shows the typical start-up isn't innovative, has no plans to grow, has one employee, and generates less than $100,000 dollars in revenue. It covers a wide range of fascinating topics like: What are today's entrepreneurial industries? How are new businesses financed? What makes some entrepreneurs more successful than others? How well does the typical entrepreneur do? How valuable is the average start-up?

The author of book is widely regarded within the academic community as the top entrepreneurship scholar in the world. I would strongly recommend his book to anyone who is serious about entrepreneurship.

Interesting read if you're considering entrepreneurship

I found this book to be an interesting read for people considering becoming entrepreneurs. It is filled with data points that are not very well know. I would take some of conclusions with a grain of salt, as some of the data backing it is not all that solid. However, the author does mention when the data is not extensive.

It's not a guide to entrepreneurship and if you aren't sold on starting your own business, then it will probably seem rather gloomy. However, it's a good eye opener if you have a decent job and have considered starting a company just to not have to work for somebody else. Would defeinitely recommend it if you are thinking about starting your own business but are on the fence.

The conclusion set forth in the end seemed a bit rushed (it's all mentioned in the last 2 pages) but I think the previous chapters are worth it.

It also has a lot of references (almost half the book pages are filled with references), so depending on what kind of reader you are, that might be (or not) a good thing.

feels old. old data, old ideas. It needs to be refreshed to move itself out of the time when the internet did not make entrepreneurship a totally different game. also it spends a disproportionate amount of time dealing with why women, african-americans and other groups don't do well as entrepreneurs, which is only of interest to you if you like depressing cold truths.

My Thoughts:

Robin Jones Gunn is one of my favorite authors. I read her books as a young teenager, college student, and now as an adult. God has used her writing to encourage me in some very difficult seasons of life. Recently, two of her novellas were updated and released again to celebrate the upcoming Hallmark Christmas movie based on the books.

These novellas are two of my favorites, and reading them is a delight to my soul. Robin’s writing is very compelling, and makes the reader feel part of the story. Set at Christmas time in England, the books take you on the personal journey of a young woman looking for her father, but what she finds is more than she ever imagined. Filled with a heartwarming story of family and the right amount of romance, these books are a must read. Plan to read these when you have no other plans because you will not want to stop. I cannot wait to read her latest installment called “Kissing Father Christmas,” which I know will not disappoint. Be sure to stay tuned for my review of that one soon. Grab your favorite cup of tea, and your favorite cozy chair, and begin. Happy reading!

A delightful heartwarming story of finding love in the Christmas season in the most delightful way!

I am so delighted when an exceptional novel gets to be made into a movie, and that is just what is happening to Robin Jones Gunn's novels Finding Father Christmas and Engaging Father Christmas. In fact since the movie is due out in December on the Hallmark Channel, the novels have been combined to allow the reader to discover how it all turns out in one spectacular seamless story line just as the movie will do. So if you are looking for a wonderful contemporary Christmas romance, trust me and pick this one up.

In Finding Father Christmas, Miranda Carson's been searching for her biological father based only on a handful of clues her mother left behind as an actress. She apparently had a brief love affair with a man who she refused to divulged to Miranda and only upon her death did she uncover a faded old black and white photo of a child in the lap of Father Christmas and an old playbill of her mother's with an apparent reference to who might be her father in it. Since Father Christmas is only recognized in London, England as well as the photography studio's name on the back of the photo, she believes that is the first place she should begin her search. After she learns that the photo studio has long been sold, she struggles for help with those in a small town of Carlton Heath, who may just know where her legacy lies. She only wishes to know who her father is, not try to upset those who may not be happy with what she uncovers and what that may mean to the family who has never heard of Miranda.

In the sequel to Finding Father Christmas, Engaging Father Christmas has led Miranda to the discovery of who her father was and the family she now has the chance to meet. However, happily ever afters seem to be only in the fairy tales, as rumors swirl of Miranda's birth and how that affects the family name of one of London's most influential families. It could spell disaster or it could bring about the only thing Miranda has ever dreamed of and that is knowing that she isn't alone in the world anymore and that she has a family who could love her if only given the chance. Is there more than the love of her family waiting or does Father Christmas have more than she could have ever wished for?

I received Finding Father Christmas/Engaging Father Christmas by Robin Jones Gunn compliments of Faith Words, a division of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased and personal opinion. I absolutely LOVED this book and it reminds me of what I always envisioned for a small town of Carlton Heath set in London, England. Some quirky but lovable characters, heart-warming small town charm, and lots of romance to be found that isn't over the top obvious, even though you know how it might all play out. You want a bit of tension that it might not work out so easily and that you fall in love not only with the main characters but all the secondary supporting ones as well. My favorite was Ellie. You just never know what she will be dressed up as, and she truly loves what she does. It does make me want to watch A Christmas Carol all over again, but more than that, to appreciate the present more than ever before! I'd easily give this a 4.5 out of 5 stars. Don't forget to pick up the 3rd novel, Kissing Father Christmas due out in October!

In Finding Father Christmas, Miranda Carson invites you to be her guest and join her into the book - you literally feel like you are her friend inside the book with her on her journey. Her Mother - an actress - refuses to tell her anything about her Father - her Mother dies and she finds some clues her mother left behind a faded old black and white photo of a child in the lap of Father Christmas and an old playbill of her mother's with an apparent reference to who might be her father in it. Now Father Christmas is only in London, England - so as you and I would do - being her guest we all go to London to find her Father - she goes to London and finds the photo shop and that leads to a small town called Carlton Heath and when she gets there - you will not believe what happens - well she ..........you know I cannot tell you - it would ruin it - you need to go and get it - it is worth every Penney
Now as for the second book Finding Father Christmas, I am not going to say very much - Miranda meets the people in Carlton Heath and they.......well What happens to Miranda? Will she ever meet her Father Christmas? What happens when she gets involved with the town? Is there anything special that happens? Ya'll you have to get this book - it is so worth it.

Seriously interesting psychology - yet very entertaining

As one who has always been fascinated by psychology, yet not formally educated in it (beyond a few college courses) and not inclined to read dry textbooks on the subject, this book is a treat. It blends the latest research in individual and social psychology with funny anecdotes and insights into why we behave the way we do. Don't be put off by the title if it seems a bit frivolous: this is a serious, thought-provoking book (though quite humorous and entertaining, as well).

This is more or less a continuation of the author's previous book, "You Are Not So Smart", but you need not feel compelled to read the former: you don't really need to know the themes and ideas of the first book to read this one. In essence, the book shows us how knowledge and understanding of our self-delusions can be used to help us become, well, 'less dumb'. Using recent discoveries and research into behavior to help us see that we are not the objective observers of our lives we believe ourselves to be, but, rather, delusional lemmings stuck on autopilot, the author gives us 17 examples of how we fool ourselves in life.

Each example is brilliantly written and fascinating, incorporating science, funny anecdotes and trivia. But don't get the idea that this is just a whimsical 'pop psychology' book; this is a serious study of our irrational unconscious selves, yet presented in a highly entertaining way (much like how Richard Feynman could make quantum physics accessible and understandable to the average person, as Carl Sagan did with cosmology - complicated science explained in an engaging manner).

The author's central theme is that scientific method has saved - and continues to save - mankind from it's delusional dumbness. While you may deny that had you lived a few centuries ago you would have believed geese grew on trees, don't be so sure. In the example of 'Popular Belief', we learn that even today, myths and popular delusions abound: people in Korea - including highly-educated people - "know" that electric fans cause death, invisibly: If you leave a fan on when you leave the house, all of your pets will be dead when you return. But, not to worry, science will eventually save the Koreans from this delusion:

"When you believe in something, you rarely seek out evidence to the contrary to see how it matches up with your assumptions. That's the source of urban legends, folklore, superstitions, and all the rest. Skepticism is not your strong suit. In the background, while you crochet and golf and browse cat videos, people using science are fighting against your stupidity."

Thank God.

You will definitely be enlightened as to the nature of your own existence and the society you inhabit; it's that good of a book. Highly recommended.

Entertaining, BUT

The good: I enjoyed reading this book. McRaney has a light, breezy style.

The bad: the book was so poorly edited that until the acknowledgements, I speculated that it hadn't been edited at all. For example, neither McRaney nor his editors has mastered the elicit/illicit and elusive/illusive distinctions, among other minor errors of syntax. McRaney's explanation of the Scotsman's Fallacy was unfocused, and his explanation of circular reasoning (petitio principii) was confusing.

The main reason I dinged two stars off this book, however, was McRaney's mini-biography of Freud, which was so poorly written that I initially thought it was a joke and kept hunting for the punch line. Now I keep wondering: what ELSE about this book should I find untrustworthy?

Don't buy it if you read "You're not so smart"

As much as I love McRaney, I was a bit disappointed to see that this is a re-edited version of "You're not so smart". As brilliant and informative as it is, I would rather not have spent the money as I already had the first book.
