About the Author
Professor Ian Hutchings has been GKN Professor of Manufacturing Engineering since 2001 at the University of Cambridge. Before that, he was Reader in Tribology in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy.
In 2005 he founded the Inkjet Research Centre in the Institute for Manufacturing in which he and colleagues investigate the science and technology which underpins this important industrial technology. From 1998 to 2012, Professor Hutchings served as the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal, Wear.
He is the sole author of first edition of 'Tribology: Friction and Wear of Engineering Materials' published in 1992, as well as having authored numerous journal and conference papers. In 1994, he was awarded the Tribology Trust Silver Medal, in 2000 the Donald Julius Groen Prize by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and in 2007 the Staudinger-Durrer Prize by ETH Zurich

The only thing I would do to improve this book

[[VIDEOID:c1b3fd06c06ecba67887b61a429fdd3]]In the preface to this book, the author, Margarita Madrigal, promises that if you complete this book, you will then be able to go to a Spanish speaking country and understand them. I will now go that far and agree with the author because I believe that in order to speak and understand Spanish with confidence, you will need a learning-Spanish audio program to supplement this book. But as the author promises, I honestly believe that this book will help you to do the following:

1. Speak Spanish
2. Read Spanish
3. Write in Spanish
4. Think in Spanish

There are so many things that I like about this book. For starters, the author of this book uses a very interesting method to help you quickly learn Spanish. What she does is teach the reader how to add hundreds and hundreds of Spanish words to his or her vocabulary by simply using the English words that you already know. For example, did you already know that the following words are both Spanish and English words:

Actor
Popular
Animal
Capital
hotel
Radio
Conductor
Probable
Cable
Ideal
Flexible

The only difference is the pronunciation is different in Spanish. But the words are spelled the same way and have the same meaning in both Spanish and English.

In addition to showing the reader that he or she already knows many Spanish words because there are so many English words that are spelled the same and that have the same meaning, the author also shows how the reader can take many English words that he or she already knows and convert them into Spanish words just by making small changes in the words. For example, the author shows how we can convert many English words that end in “ist” into Spanish words by adding the letter “a” to them:

Pianist – el pianista
Violinist – el violinista
Dentist – el dentista
Oculist – el oculista
Capital – el capitalista
Communist – el comunista
Novelist – el novelista
Optimist – el optimista

I also found it beneficial that there is a helpful pronunciation key at the beginning of the book. Another thing that I really like about this book is that after every 9 or 10 lessons, there are a series of tests that help you test your progress and see how far you have come.
Near the end of the book, there is also a section called “Common Spanish Expressions” where you’ll find five pages packed with helpful Spanish expressions, such as:
Acabar de (plus infinitive) - to have just

A pesar de – in spite of
Buena suerte – good luck
Claro – of course
Dar la mano – to shake hands
Echar la culpa – to blame
Esta vez – this time
Me alegro de verlo – I am happy to see you
No lo haga – don’t do it
No es justo – it isn’t fair
Otra vez – again
Poco a poco – little by little
Ya lo creo – now I believe it

At the very end of this book, there is a handy 35-page “Vocabulary” section that is organized like a dictionary. You will find Spanish words from “a” (to, at) all the way to “zoologia” (zoology).
Out of the 45 chapters covered in this book, my favorites were Chapter 41 and Chapter 42. In chapter 41, the author teaches The Present Subjunctive and breaks down how to express hope, fear, doubt and desire in Spanish. In chapter 42, the author teaches The Past Subjunctive and breaks down how to express past hopes, fears, doubts and desires in Spanish. She even explains how to use the conditional and past subjunctive together. In other words, you will learn how to express the following in Spanish:

I would write a letter if I had the time.
She would buy an airplane if it were possible.
They would watch the movie if were interesting.

In chapter 42, Madrigal also covers the Past Perfect Subjunctive which enable you to express the following in Spanish:

I would have known the lesson if I had studied.
We would have spoken Spanish if we had studied.
If they had had time, they would have traveled to Spain.

The reason why Chapters 41 and 42 are my favorite chapters is because these are the chapters that teach the Spanish subjunctive. I, like many native English speakers, find that the Spanish subjunctive is one of the most difficult areas of Spanish. In Chapters 41 and 42, Madrigal does a fantastic job breaking-down the complex topic of the Spanish subjunctive.

The only thing that I did not like about this book is that the vocabulary does not cover modern technology. The first edition of this book was written in 1951. This book seriously needs to be updated. You will learn how to say the Spanish words for telephone, newspaper and telegram. But don’t expect to learn how to say cellphone, website or email in Spanish.
Although this book does not teach you any Spanish words related to modern technology, I still recommend that buy this book because it will allow you to quickly learn hundreds of Spanish words quite easily – just by using the English words that you already know. A brief note about accents

Since the original date of publication (1951), the Real Academia de la Lengua Española (guardian of the Spanish Language) officially removed the accents on some one-syllable words. The old spellings appear in the book. For example, in Chapter 31 (common irregular verbs), these words have changed:
Old form: ví, vió, dí, dió, fuí, fué
New form: vi, vio, di, dio, fui, fue
(NOTE: this is not a complete list!)
Old spellings also appear in exercises using these words.
These changes don't change the pronunciation of the words! Accent marks are used to show how a word should be written in accordance with the way it is pronounced. The rules on pronouncing weak-weak, weak-strong, strong-weak and strong-strong vowel combinations apply: so, for example, vio (new form) sounds the same as vió (old form).
This is a great book for learning Spanish. Don't let the age of it throw you.

No structure

Easily the worst book on foreign language I've ever owned. No structure whatsoever, you learn how to say numbers in Spanish towards the end of the book. Past tense is taught before all other tenses. Grammar is very weak and mostly relies on remembering patterns of similar sentences

What you will definitely learn is that there are a lot of words that sound like their English counterparts. Like artist -> artista. I have no idea how it's supposed to help me talk in Spanish 'in few short weeks' as book promises

So good! This episode takes the series to a new level

I tore through this episode of The Cinderella Society after thoroughly enjoying episode 1 - and this one was even better. Jess is faced with the reality of her new position within in The Cindys, and there's so much she doesn't know yet about the bigger picture that she's frustrated. What I love is that her uncertainty doesn't keep her from standing her ground and doing what she believes is right. She may not always choose wisely, but she doesn't play it safe, not when someone she cares about can be helped. And in the end, you can really see her making decisions from a place of strength. Her inner conflict felt very real, and I ached for her and cheered for her at equal turns (especially the scenes with her would-be Prince Charming, which alternated between being wonderfully fun and then filled with all the angst that any first crush would be - brilliant!). I'm so looking forward to the next installment!

The original book is one of my favourite YAs!

Spoilers for episode 1 of The Cinderella Society.

In the second episode of Kay Cassidy’s re-released The Cinderella Society, we get a lot more into the Wickeds, the nasty girl group that works to dominate as many people as possible. Jess has to reconcile her own terror and self-esteem issues about becoming the new Cinderella Society leader, and learn more about their fight against bullies…all while trying to learn to be a Cindy, work her job, and go on her first dates with Ryan Steele, the crush of her dreams.

Discussions of how painful and frightening bullying and targeting can be, how to help girls stand on their own two feet, and how high school lunchtime can be terrifying are not out of place in this post-It Gets Better/Demi Lovato world, and I liked that part just as much as in the original. Jess also has some hard choices to face when she discovers that the Cindys might have her back – but only to a point. Additions include more about personality (not just image) in the Cinderella Makeover Manual, which really focuses on how to create your best self, inside and out. I loved that part of it, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it changes episode 3 of this series. Other additions include continuing the faith and religion themes and changes in some of the names of the organizations. Deletions I didn’t love were some of the more romance-y bits. While this version kept most of the Ryan-Jess romance in tact, I missed the swooniness of Ryan and Jess’ kisses. This takes things back to a G rating instead of PG, and I was disappointed to see the story scrubbed cleaner.

Overall, I’m still looking forward to continuing this new version of one of my favourite stories, but I do miss the original. That said, I think it will be interesting to see what Cassidy does with the final (and new) episode of these novellas.

Art of Boxtrolls Kindle Edition

First let me say that this is a great art of book for an absolutely gorgeous film and everyone who loved the movie should seek out this book. However, I was disappointed at the resolution of many of the image files in the kindle edition. Typically I would go for the print edition but in my large collection of "Art of" books the one glaring flaw is that page layout dictates that some images are often printed far too small. I was hoping a digital edition of the book would remedy that problem but hopefully this is something they can improve in future digital art of books.

Note to the publisher- I have seen several reviewers comment on the lack of pictures of the puppets from the film. I would like to draw your attention to the other art department that was neglected even more than the puppet fabricators; the storyboard artists. Disappointingly there is only one partial storyboard scene included in the entire book. I love the decision to include so much character design and production design work in the book but I hope there is a little more storyboard work included in the future even if it comes at the expense of some of the text.

Expensive!

I deeply love Red Pandas so I was excited to get this book. However it's VERY expensive. It's meant to be a textbook (I would LOVE to take this class) so it's really full of information, but it was more school type rather than for lovers of Red Pandas.

This book was worth every penny! As a student of conservation biology, it was detailed and educational. Not only does it discuss current research regarding the Red Panda, but it also had recommendations for future research that is needed to better understand this adorable creature.

The Princeton Review for the AP Chemistry Exam is a much better choice.

This book might be OK if you need a shallow review of very basic chemistry. It will do nothing to help you pass the new AP Chemistry Exam. The new exam is focused on in-depth analysis and application of chemical principles. This book does nothing to address those types of problems. If you are desperate for a review guide, The Princeton Review for the AP Chemistry Exam is a much better choice.

I ordered this book at one-day shipping because I was desperate to get it before the AP Chemistry Exam. I was counting on it to be a rich source of material, but I was sadly mistaken.

This book doesn't go into enough detail to do well on the AP Chem Exam. It reviews basic problems/concepts that any basic Chemistry student would know.

Not impressed.
