Two books in one! Provides a great systematic math review AND a guide to proven strategies for ACT test prep!

ACT test prep is my life. Really. It's what I do for a living, and I think about it all the time. Until now, the only book I have used and recommended for ACT prep has been The Real ACT Guide, because it is the only ACT test prep book that contains actual retired ACT tests. But that book does have one weakness: it does not include a comprehensive, systematic review of the math content that is tested on the ACT. I have tried using test prep books from other companies, but have never found one that satisfies my requirements. I'm really glad to have discovered Richard Corn's book, "Ultimate Guide to the Math ACT." I like this book for two reasons. First, Part 1 of the book includes a review of all the math topics that can appear on the test. The author explains each topic and then provides several multiple choice practice problems to reinforce student learning. A detailed answer explanation is then given for each problem.
The second reason this book is a good choice is that in Part 2, the book explains how to use my favorite work, "The Real ACT Guide" to develop test-taking strategies. There are specific guidelines on setting up a study plan and taking practice tests from the Guide. Part 2 also explains how to use backsolving ("guess and check"), diagrams, answer elimination, and other time-saving, brain-building strategies. A very helpful feature is an index of the most frequently-encountered topics on the ACT math test, cross-linked to the relevant individual test questions in the 5 ACT practice tests found in The Real ACT Guide.
This book should be useful to students preparing on their own for the ACT as well as to test prep experts like me who want to offer their students an in-depth content review for ACT math. I will certainly be adding this helpful book to my test prep arsenal!

Best review book for ACT Math

I was looking for an ACT Math Book that had a comprehensive review of math topics covered in the ACT Math section, and Richard Corn's book HAD IT! I was able to systematically go through the book and review math concepts that I had forgotten through the years and then successfully apply them to the ACT Math test! I took the ACT test in December of 2013, and with the help of Richard Corn's book, I was able to get a 35! As it turns out, I would have scored a perfect 36 if I hadn't made a couple of foolish mistakes! I highly recommend this book!

Worth hundreds in tutoring

I am a full time professional test prep tutor. I work with hundreds of highly motivated, competitive students looking to gain an edge on being admitted to the most selective universities. This is the type of book that I love to find. Written by a tutor who works on these topics daily. I have just finished reading this book from cover to cover. Though I did not do all of the exercises, I will. And I will read the explanations. Reading the answer explanations is as important as reading the lessons, maybe more so.
And I will have students buy this book. How I will use it is as it is intended: a workbook on areas where a student is weak. I can identify those areas and will assign that chapter as homework. A student does not have to do ALL of the book to get a higher score, just the chapters that are problematic.
Because Richard is a professional tutor with many years of experience, he writes each lesson like a tutoring session - straight to the point, learn what you need to learn to get this type of problem correct, and then move on.
I did read the 1 & 2 star reviews. I can understand their points, if you want professionally edited polish, go to Kaplan or Barron's. But they focus more on polish and not to the point tutoring. I love to read books by real tutors who work with real students, like Erica Meltzer (her ACT English book is a perfect compliment to this one). Like Erica, Richard writes in a "teaching" style, telling you what he knows from studying the ACT. The book flows like a conversation between a top-notch tutor and a motivated student. He teaches what the student needs to learn and then moves on. If he covered every topic in depth, this book would be thousands of pages long.
I only recommend investing your $15 in this book if you want a real bargain from a tutor who probably charges more than $300/hour for one-on-one sessions. ($15 is about 3 minutes of his time). But his book gives you 20 to 30 hours worth of tutoring.
