FUNNISISIMO

Bill C. and Bill T. must have had my family in mind when they wrote their book. "The 15 household items (circa 1970)" were, and in some cases still are, in my parents home in Hialeah. If you were raised in South Florida you cannot miss this book. You will laugh at the turn of every page and you will laugh OUTLOUD. This book defines a generation that at times seems torn between their Hispanic roots and their American upbringing, the Arroz con Pollo and Diet Coke (or Tab) generation. Whether you've been in the United States five years of fifty years, if you've lived in South Florida you will relate to this book. But most importantly, buy it for the yucks you'll get out of it. It's well worth every kilo.

Un libro muy chistoso, pero un poco cortado.

This book is funny as hell, but it seems a bit short. Any Spanish-speaking gringo's going to get a kick out of this book. I thought English had some funny expressions, but a few of the lines out of this book are just so messed up I almost passed out laughing. Even some of the things that almost make sense are just so bizarre that you can't quit laughing. A must have for any Spanish student or bilingual Gringo.

This book is truly like no other..If you're parents are Cuban, you can relate to the entire book... I felt as though the authors had lived with my family... It's hilarious.. You will enjoy this book and it's great to see that you are not the only one, whose parents believed and said all of the sayings in this book!

About the Author
Hector Malot (1830-1907) was a French writer born in La Bouille, Seine-Maritime. He studied law in Rouen and Paris, but eventually literature became his passion. He worked as a dramatic critic for Lloyd Francais and as a literary critic for "L'Opinion Nationale." His first book, published in 1859, was" Les Amants." Malot eventually wrote more than 70 books. By far his most famous book is "Sans Famille" ("Nobody's Boy, " 1878), which deals with the travels of the young orphan Remi, who is sold to the street musician Vitalis at age 10. "Sans Famille" gained fame as a children's book, though it was not originally intended as such. He announced his retirement as an author of fiction in 1895, but in 1896 he returned with the novel "L'amour Dominateur" as well as the account of his literary life "Le Roman de mes Romans" (The Novel of my Novels).

A wonderful book

This is a book in my father's collection. I read it when I was 8 or 9 and just read it again recently. In Vietnamese, it is translated as: "Khong Gia Dinh" or "Vo Gia Dinh", meaning "No Family". It is a masterpiece in literature, and it is still in print in Vietnam. It makes a wonderful children book and a deeply moving and meaningful story for the adults as well.
It is a story about an orphan boy, abandoned by his family. He was raised by his kind adopted mother, and was sold by his adopted father in hardship to a traveling man who eventually, became his teacher and a father-figure. With his teacher, he learned to play music and perform on the street with 3 intelligent dogs and a monkey. He traveled through the towns of France, and through life twist and turn, eventually, lead to the ultimate search for his real family.
The book provides insightful description of life on the street and heart warming relationship through life struggles and survival.

A BOOK YOU WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER

NOBODY'S BOY was introduced to me in elementary school while growing up in Holland. It was one of the best books I had ever read and my parents gave it to me for 'Sinterklaas', which is a day on which we exchanged presents. The translated Dutch title is "Alone in the world". It's a story about a boy without a family, his ups and downs and his remarkable character.For some reason the book got lost while we moved to the U.S.A., but I never forgot the story.
Not too long ago (I'm 74 years old now) I realized I would never be able to read the book again, because I did not remember the author. "Never mind" said the librarian, "just type in the Dutch title and we might be able to find it". Sure enough, there it was on the computer screen :"Nobody's Boy", by Hector Malot.
The librarian ordered it for me and we (my husband and I) enjoyed it even more than in our youth. Our two sons and their children have also read it and it's on their list of favorite books.
We will now buy it and add this wonderful book to our library at home.

Timeless Reading

I have been looking for this book since grade school, which makes about 30 years! I wasn't sure of the name of the author but took a chance and ordered anyway. I was delighted to find it was the same book I had loved so many years ago. A poignant and touching story about a boy looking for his family, it was a book I couldn't put down. Vivid and stirring, well written, touching ... all describe this wonderful book. I highly recommend it for any age.

About the Author
Heather Darcy Bhandari is a director of Mixed Greens Gallery in New York City. She has curated over 40 exhibitions at Mixed Greens while managing and advising a roster of nearly two-dozen artists. She also regularly curates independent shows. Heather lectures at career-development programs at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Rhode Island School of Design, Georgia State University and Hunter College. Jonathan Melber is a litigator at a prominent arts-and-entertainment law firm. He represents artists, galleries and collectors, as well as a host of creative individuals and companies in the entertainment world.

Definitive Resource for Artists and Art Professionals!

I'm an emerging artist who's been shooting for the past couple of years. I've done some shows in the non-profit realm, but only in the past few months have I been actively trying to figure out the ins and outs of the gallery scene.

For months now, I've been scrounging for the most basic information: How do for-profit galleries operate? What kind of contractual/financial obligations are required? How do you properly document your work? I've gone to workshops, interviewed artists, and dug through a lot of junk on the internet...

Only to find that everything I needed (and lots more) was in this book.

This is the definitive how-to book on running a fine art business (from the artist's side), specifically in regards to working with galleries. They don't offer any secret formulas for success, but instead dish out best practices for presenting yourself as professionally as possible.

What amazed me most was the depth of subject matter this book covers. It offers everything from sample legal forms to explicit instructions on how to pack your work for shipment. They use a very open and honest writing style throughout. Instead of coming across as preachy or snobbish, the authors sound more like a good friend letting you in on the secrets of the industry.

An interesting device they use throughout is to include relevant quotes from art professionals on almost every spread. These tie in directly with the subject matter of each section and represent the perspectives of artists, curators and gallery owners. It's one thing for the author to say what he or she thinks, but another thing when you get other voices add to the mix.

My only complaint about the book is a very minor one. While the book is striking in its design, I question the use of a bold sans serif for the body text throughout the book. There's enough white space and leading to make it work, but it seems a choice of aesthetics over practicality.

I don't often get this jazzed about books (especially not over a how-to manual). But I've seen firsthand what a lack of comprehensive resources there are for artists trying to figure out the how's and what's of the art world. This book does a magnificent job of filling that void and I'd recommend it to any artist who's trying to get established.

Useful but don't make this your only resource

This book is a useful resource because of its simplicity. It's easy to flip back and forth to find templates for things like consignment agreements and the like. I would agree with another reviewer, however, that the book is biased having been written by young gallerists working in New York for only the past decade or so.

It offers a picture of the way galleries on the East Coast function at the moment. This is evident in the many quotes along the margins by few artists but more often gallery owners. I found some of these comments to reveal a disparaging - even snotty - tone about working with artists, despite the fact that artists are the people who create the work keeping them in business. It is helpful to know that these attitudes exist because you may have to face them in your career.

Look for other more encouraging resources in addition to this book. I recently picked up "How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist: Selling Yourself Without Selling Out." In tone, this is a much more empowering book and it has a great many more resources contained within its pages and appendices. The author, Caroll Michels has been working with artists throughout the country (not just in the distorted East Coast art scene) since the 1970s. The book has been through several editions and has clearly been updated and expanded to reflect the changes to the art world. In that sense, a greater depth and breadth of experience is brought to bear on the topic.

M. Forster and the creators of recent television serials. By looking at the category of "sovereignty" at multiple scales and in diverse formal, geographic, and historical contexts, Lauren M. E. Goodlad shows that the ideological crucible for "high" realism was not a hegemonic liberalism. It was, rather, a clash of modern liberal ideals struggling to distintricate themselves from a powerful conservative vision of empire while striving to negotiate the inequalities of power along lines of race, gender, nationality, and ethnicity which a supposedly universalistic liberalism had helped to generate.

The material occasion for the mid-Victorian era's rich realist experiments was, thus, the transition from an informal empire of trade that could be celebrated as "liberal" to a neo-feudal imperialism that only Tories could warmly embrace. In this way the book places realism's "geopolitical aesthetic" at the heart of recurring modern experiences of breached sovereignty, forgotten history, and subjective exile. The Coda, titled "The Way We Historicize Now", concludes the book with connections to recent debates about "surface reading", "distant reading" and the hermeneutics of suspicion.

Lauren M. E. Goodlad is the Kathryn Paul Professorial of English and Criticism & Interpretive Theory at the University of Illinois, Urbana. She is the author of Victorian Literature and the Victorian State: Character and Governance in a Liberal Society as well as the co-editor of several books and special issues including Mad Men, Mad World: Sex, Politics Style and the 1960s and The Ends of History, a special issue of Victorian Studies. Her articles have appeared in journals including American Literary History, ELH, MLQ, Novel: A Forum on Fiction and PMLA.
